2001 Yamaha Riva 125 Remove Rear Tire
Yamaha's Riva 125 scooter has enjoyed a successful run since its introduction in 1985, receiving only a few revisions until 2001, its final year in production. Hailed as a practical, yet fun way to get around, the Riva 125 requires a deviously complicated procedure to remove the rear wheel for a basic tire change. Although it isn't beyond the reach of most Riva owners, a fair degree of mechanical aptitude is required. This job will require a minimum of one hour to complete.

Remove Rear Tire
- Raise the scooter onto its center stand, and unlock the seat, using the ignition key. Lift the seat into a completely open position.
- Pull the cotter pin out from the end of the rear axle, using pliers. Pull in the rear brake lever, and hold it in place. Unscrew the rear axle lock nut, using a 22-mm or 24-mm socket. Release the rear brake lever.
- Remove the screws from the bottom of the right engine cowl, using a Phillips screwdriver. Pull the cowl away slightly from the scooter, and lift it upwards to free the cover from the hooks along the side of the seat. Set the right engine cowl aside.
- Unscrew the bolts from the bottom of the right-rear shock absorber and forward corner of the swingarm, positioned below the muffler, using a 12-mm socket. Move the right-rear shock absorber away from the rear wheel, and pull the swingarm away from the scooter.
- Pull the rear wheel off of the rear axle, and set it down on a clean work space. Unscrew the valve stem from the wheel's rim, using a valve core wrench. Allow the tire to deflate completely.
- Push the upper edge of the tire away from the wheel's upper lip. Insert a pair of tire irons into the gap between the tire and the wheel's lip. Press both tire irons toward the center of the wheel to stretch the tire over the wheel.
- Hold one tire iron in place, and reposition the other tire iron a few inches away. Press the tire iron down to stretch more of the tire over the wheel. Repeat until the entire upper half of the tire has been freed from the wheel.
- Insert a tire iron under the tire, and hook it over the wheel's upper lip. Push down on the wheel, and pull the tire iron toward you until the lower half of the tire pops off of the wheel.
